Tent City Residents Protest Cleanings

People living in tents under viaducts in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood say they will no longer clear out for bimonthly street cleanings when it’s especially cold.

When they refused to move their possessions ahead of a scheduled cleaning Friday, the Department of Streets and Sanitation canceled it. Tent city residents are now demanding that the city automatically cancel cleanings on days that are below 40 degrees.

A statement from city said it won’t clean when temperatures are in single digits with below zero windchill.
