5 questions with…Barry Winograd. Winograd is a Jazz host on WDCB and WXRT. He used to be an engineer here at WBEZ, but is mainly known as the sax player at the all-night Jazz jam-fests at the Green Mill. His band the “Green Mill Quartet” is playing today at 5:30pm at the MCA. So I asked him 5 questions via e-mail. In typical Winograd response, he gave me the shortest answers ever.‚  I wasn’t going to post this, but there’s something charming about the terse efficiency… JK: How long has The Green Mill Quartet been playing at Green Mill? BW: 1. since 1987 (Hashimoto since 1988), (me since early 1990’s) (Shandling about 5 years). JK: What do you guys usually play? And you let other musicians sit in, right? BW: Good Music. Yes, it is a jam session. JK: What do you do if a musician is not good? BW: Ask them to go home and practice. JK: The Green Mill is well known for its late night crowds, wait…I mean their late night NOISY crowds…how do you deal? BW: Don’t hear it on stage. Off stage, join in and listen. JK: Will you be awake for the performance tomorrow and are you looking forward to playing outside..say, before 2am? BS: Am awake at anytime for the Jazz experience. Especially 10a-2p Monday-Friday at 90.9fm WDCB.
