What kind of leadership is needed in the world today? What new combination of power, influence, and persuasion can effectively negotiate a complex international agenda, and what new approaches might the next U.S. administration provide? Former assistant secretary of defense Joseph Nye suggests that authoritarian and coercive forms of leadership are less and less effective, and offers suggestions for how a new administration should move forward to resolve the challenges it will likely face.

The event is presented as part of “The Road to 2008: American Leadership in an Uncertain World.”  This 2007-2008 Chicago and the World Forum continues with a seven-part series on major international issues the next administration will face, including the role of international institutions, the Middle East, U.S. - Europe relations, globalization, and the rise of Asia.

Recorded Wednesday, April 09, 2008 at InterContinental Hotel.
