Dr. Jose P. Rizal (1861-1896), the national hero of the Philippines, was a multi-faceted genius.  He was a humanist, a politico-religious activist of his time, and the earliest exponent of nationalism in Asia.  Rizal was eventually executed for his writings and beliefs. Dr. Ramon G. Lopez, a descendant of General Paciano Mercado Rizal, brother of Dr. Jose P. Rizal, presents fascinating insights into Dr. Rizal’s dreams and aspirations for the Philippines. Lopez recollects the ideals expressed by Dr. Rizal during his lifetime and discusses their relevance to the present and future.

This program is co-sponsored by the Philippine Consulate General in honor of the Sesquicentennial Celebration of Dr. Jose P. Rizal.

Recorded Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at the Harold Washington Library Center.
