On Friday, Cook County Board President Todd Stroger announced the resignation of his cousin, Donna Dunnings, from her post as CFO of the county. He claims he asked her to step down when he learned another former employee Tony Cole planned to make unspecified but explosive allegations against Dunnings. Cole was fired from his position as human resources assistant for concealing a felony conviction. As the story unfolded, two county commissioners and both dailies have called for Stroger’s resignation. Chicago Reader political columnist Ben Joravsky says there’s something missing in the midst of all this fire and brimstone over patronage hiring.
