Twenty candidates filed to get on the ballot for Chicago mayor. The deadline passed Monday with a surprise filing, and a bit of trash talk.

The final candidate for mayor to file a petition was community activist Bill “Dock” Walls. Walls said the delay was intentional, so he could be listed at the bottom of a long list of candidates.

“We believe that voters will go down the list, and they will eliminate all of those persons who don’t represent their interests, and vote for us,” said Walls, who won less than 9 percent of the vote when he ran for mayor in 2007.

To stay on the ballot for February’s election, Walls will have to survive challenges to his petitions. Objections, which are due by next Tuesday, are often filed by people associated with opposing campaigns, and at this point, there are 19 of them.

Meantime, one campaign for mayor may not have a candidate. A group calling themselves “friends of Roland Burris” claimed it turned in close to 20,000 signatures to get the outgoing U.S. Senator on the ballot for mayor. Supporter Toni Randle said Burris was aware of the effort.

“We’ve let him know what our intentions are,” Randle said. “He just smiled.”

Longtime Burris advisor Delmarie Cobb said, “I don’t think in the final analysis he’s going to run.”

Burris himself could not be reached for comment Monday evening.
