On Wednesday’s Afternoon Shift, The Break Room features the legendary ’90s indie-pop group Olivia Tremor Control with their song “No Growing (Exegesis)” off of their classic 1996 debut album Dusk at Cubist Castle. Olivia Tremor Control helped define a signature, influential style of modern psychedelic pop music that recalled classic groups like The Beatles and The Kinks. Hailing from Athens, GA, Olivia Tremor Control was a member of the Elephant 6 Recording Company, a collective of musicians and bands that include seminal independent artists like Neutral Milk Hotel and Apples in Stereo.

Bill Doss, co-founder of Elephant 6 and Olivia Tremor Control, unexpectedly died yesterday from unknown causes at age 43. He played with the band at the Pitchfork Music Festival just under two weeks ago, and he and the group were at work on a new album that they had hoped to have out next year. Afternoon Shift pays tribute to him and his memory on today’s show.

The Break Room also features the electropop group Passion Pit with their single “Constant Conversations,” off of their critically-acclaimed new album Gossamer. Passion Pit first started getting buzz four years ago with their debut EP Chunk of Change for their dancey atmosphere and their rollicking pop choruses. They now return  to the scene with both a pre-Lollapalooza appearance tomorrow at The House of Blues as well as a set this Friday at Lollapalooza.
