By Emily WilenskyChicago Police Superintendent Jody Weis said it will be up to the new mayor to decide how many hires the department will make next year. According to Weis, the police department currently has 1,100 vacancies.
Weis says he doubts new hiring will keep pace with the roughly 450 officers who leave the force each year.
“There’s not going to be this big influx of officers coming in anytime soon, but we still have an obligation to serve and protect the residents of this city,” Weis said. “That’s why we’re always looking for strategies in which we can do more with less.”
One of those strategies is called predictive analytics—a method of using data to predict where crime might take place. Weis said he hopes to stay on as superintendent after his contract is up in March.
