Many Western thinkers prophesied that religion wouldn’t survive into the third millennium. They thought rational and tolerant thought would eventually wipe out religious dogma. Yet faith is thriving in many places around the world. And it now seems that secularism and moderate religions are in danger of being overcome by the militant and intolerant faiths that were dismissed by many intellectuals. Listen in as Martin Marty, Professor Emeritus of the History of Modern Christianity at the University of Chicago, argues that confronting fundamentalist varieties of faith is urgent in civil societies and demands multiple strategies that focus on the future rather than the past.
