Many know Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei for his iconic “Bird’s Nest” stadium design from the Beijing Olympics. Last week, his first public U.S. art exhibition opened in Central Park, but he couldn’t attend. Chinese authorities detained him in early April on suspicion of “economic crimes.” Journalist and filmmaker Alison Klayman, producer of the documentary “Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry”, tells us how Ai Weiwei’s life mirrors that of China itself in many ways. And, when local musician and composer Michael Miles isn’t touring the world, he’s connecting Chicago-area students with their Middle East peers. Last week, he and fifth graders in Lincolnwood Skyped with kids in Beirut. The two groups chatted and sang songs. For our Global Notes segment, Michael brought the Lincolnwood kids to WBEZ’s Jim and Kay Mabie Performance Studio to perform and chat.
