When Laith Saud, an Islamic World Studies instructor at DePaul University, went to Egypt after the fall of President Hosni Mubarak, he met with several members of the Muslim Brotherhood in an upscale neighborhood of Cairo. The group, which included doctors, a professor and one woman, spoke about Islam’s compatibility with democracy, their role in the revolution and Western perceptions of their social movement. We listen to excerpts of Laith’s conversation and get his take on the Brotherhood’s emergence in the new Egypt. And Samer Shehata, a professor of Arab politics at Georgetown University, offers his analysis.
