ByYesterday, U.S. Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona showed up unexpectedly at the Capitol and cast one of the last votes to raise the nation’s debt ceiling. Ms. Giffords almost lost her life in a January assassination attempt, an event that sparked national debate on gun availability in the U.S. Today, in our Here, There series, we examine gun culture in two very different places. In Switzerland, individuals love their guns, hunting clubs and government-issued rifles, but gun violence is extremely low. In South Korea, the government heavily regulates firearms, and there are only 178,000 registered guns in a country of 50 million. Later, we spend a day with the Zapatista Army of National Liberation. These indigenous peasants live in completely autonomous, self-governing settlements and refuse to recognize the authority of the Mexican state.
