A recent report from WBEZ and the journalism group City Bureau is prompting Chicago’s County Council to question whether city regulators are doing enough to protect residents from demolition debris. WBEZ’s reporting found that the city issued more than 1200 ‘demolition permits’ last year, but regulators only gave out about 50 citations for improper removal of debris. A City Council resolution cited WBEZ’s reporting to call on the head of the Public Health Department to testify. That hearing should happen within a few weeks.
