DOC’s Inmate Housing Cost Estimate Doesn’t Include All Expenses, Council Says

The Illinois Department of Corrections reports that it costs about $22,000 to house an inmate in state prison for one year. But that number doesn’t include a variety of other expenses required to run the prison system — things like medical insurance for guards, or pensions and workers comp for other staff. According to the Illinois Sentencing Policy Advisory Council, the costs for housing a single inmate can be upwards of $40,000 per year.
