A former correctional officer at the Cook County Jail is suing Sheriff Tom Dart for allegedly denying him medical leave. 53 year old Salvatore Ziccarelli claims he suffers anxiety and depression. Ziccarelli claims when he tried to take “Family Medical Leave Act” time off last summer, the sheriff’s office threatened to fire him. Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Cara Smith says some jail workers abuse FMLA leave, especially on holidays and big sporting days.
