A bill that may go before the Illinois House of Representatives in coming weeks would force local law enforcement agencies to standardize how they handle requests from immigrant victims of crimes. 

The bill focuses on U Visas, temporary visas that authorize immigrants to live in the U.S. U Visa applicants must obtain evidence from their local law enforcement agency certifying that they helped in the investigation or prosecution of a crime, but not all police and sheriff’s departments do that now.
