A federal judge plans to decide by the end of the week how the state of Illinois should speed up payments to Medicaid providers during the budget impasse. David Chizewer is a lawyer for medicaid patients who say the state’s delayed payments are hurting their health care. He says the state should pay more than $1 billion a month in the short term. The state says it doesn’t have the money, and at best could pay $310 million a month given other priorities like schools and state payroll. Both sides have until Thursday to submit documents, and the judge will make a ruling on Friday.
