New DCFS Director Says Department Is Moving Quickly To Fill Vacancies
Beverly Walker was appointed director of the Department of Children and Family Services six months ago. At that time, the agency faced intense scrutiny because of deaths of several children in state care. Walker says at that time, caseworkers were hugely overloaded and the agency was short staffed. She says since she’s taken the helm, the agency has been able to work with the caseworkers union to greatly improve staffing numbers. Walker says the state is still having trouble in some of its offices, including in Cook County.
