Former Turkish Army Chief Sentenced To Life In Landmark Trial
This week a Turkish court sentenced former armed forces chief Ilker Basbug to life imprisonment for plotting to overthrow the government. Along with Basbug some 250 other defendants were sentenced along with several others who were acquitted for their role in an alleged terrorist organization named "Ergenekon." The case has divided the Turkish people with some feeling like justice has been served and others feeling like the charges were politically motivated. Mehmet Celebi, a member of the advisory board for the Turkish prime minister’s office for Turks Abroad, tells us why he thinks the convictions are ultimately a sign of the "health of Turkish democracy."
