Global Notes: The Notre Dame Burned As Onlookers Sang

The world watched as the Notre Dame burned in Paris on Monday. Crowds sang Ave Maria in the streets while they watched one of their city’s greatest landmarks crumbling. As Paris begins the long rebuilding process, the world looks — and listens — on. For centuries, Paris has had significant influence on global music. Some of the most impactful songs were even composed in the cathedral itself. For this week’s Global Notes, we turn our attention to Paris as Catalina Maria Johnson guides us through music from and about the city, from the twelfth century to the present. Johnson is the host and producer of Beat Latino on Vocalo.
