Pretrial detentions constitute 'global crisis'

“Innocent until proven guilty” is a staple of modern jurisprudence. Still. millions of people around the world, including in Western Europe, the U.S. and Canada are detained before trial for indefinite periods of months, sometimes years. These accused are sometimes subjected to violent mistreatment, torture and prosecutorial pressures. Martin Schönteich is senior legal officer on national criminal justice reform with the Open Society Justice Initiative.
