World History Moment: WWI begins

Today’s World History Moment is July 28, 1914. Exactly 100 years ago, World War I began. The story starts a month earlier—June 28th—in Sarajevo, Bosnia, part of the Austria-Hungary Empire. Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir to the throne, was visiting the city with his wife. Austria-Hungary contained many ethnic minorities. Some of the Serbs wanted to break away and join the country of Serbia. A group of them organized a plot to kill Franz Ferdinand as he drove through Sarajevo. Historian John R. Schmidt joins us to tell us the rest of the story. (photo: "1stAustralianDivisionHooge5October1917" by Frank Hurley)
