Metra Considering Fare Hike

“Metra’s budget and finance committee will vote tomorrow on whether to impose a 5% fare increase next year.

The increase would take effect in February if approved. It would be the first time the commuter rail service has raised fares since 2002 and the fifth time in its 21 year history.

The budget proposal was made to the committee yesterday as Metra staff said they expect this year’s diesel fuel bills to top $42 million, $15 million more than anticipated in this year’s budget.

The Chicago Transit Authority also has proposed raising its fares. CTA is considering charging 25 cents more for cash-paying bus and train riders beginning next year.
