Daley Pushes for Gun Control Measures

“Chicago Mayor Richard Daley is renewing his push for tougher gun control laws.

He wants lawmakers in Springfield to pass a ban on assault weapons. He also wants them to limit firearm purchases to one handgun a month -- per person -- and require gun dealers to obtain a state license.

Daley says these restrictions would further reduce gun-related violence.

""Look at how much guns are killing people on a daily basis, and this is a health issue as much as smoking is a health issue,"" Daley says. ""This is really a health issue for children.""

The Illinois House of Representatives narrowly rejected a ban on assault weapons last year.

Meantime, Daley says he also supports a proposal by State Rep. Deborah Graham. That bill would require all gun owners with children to lock up their firearms.
