Postal Sorting Center to Stay in Rockford

Fifty postal workers in Rockford are breathing a sigh of relief today because they’re holding onto their jobs. In an effort to consolidate, the U.S. Postal Service considered moving some sorting center operations from Rockford to Palatine.

But Rich Carter, with Illinois Congressman Don Manzullo’s office, says 500 people came to a public hearing last night to convince senior postal officials not to move the services.

“There were a lot of business owners, local government officials [there]. It’s amazing how many facets of life are touched by mail,” he said.

Carter says the Rockford sorting center is very efficient and local business owners depend on that quick service. He says the Postal Service promised not to move operations right now, but he doesn’t know for how long that promise is good.
