United to Cut 1,000 Jobs

Elk Grove based United Airlines is cutting 1,000 jobs. The cuts will target salaried and management employees.

United spokeswoman Jean Medina says the airline will make the layoffs by the end of the year.

“We need to reduce our costs. We announced at the end of our first quarter, when we reported our first quarter results, that we’d be looking to reduce our costs by $400 million next year. This is part of that cost reduction,” she said.

United also will reduce advertising and marketing spending by $60 million.

The company reported losses in 2005 of $21 billion.
