Durbin Says Iraqis Need to Defend Themselves

Two proposals to bring troops home from Iraq failed yesterday in the U.S. Senate.

Illinois Senator Dick Durbin says the President and the GOP have no clear exit strategy. The democrat says it’s time to plan an endgame.

“For the President to say that we are going to stay there, may be the right message to our enemies that we’re not going to cut and run too soon but it’s the wrong message to the Iraqis. They have to understand that it’s their responsibility,” he says.

Durbin says the Iraqis have to be willing to stand and defend themselves.

The U.S. House of Representatives last week soundly rejected withdrawal timetables.
