Working at Wal-Mart

Chicago’s first Wal-Mart opens its doors this week.

No other company in recent memory has sparked so much controversy by moving to town.

Politicians, religious leaders and community groups are bitterly divided over whether the company drives down wages or jump-starts economic development.

More than 10,000 people applied for the 480 or so jobs at the new store in the West Side Austin neighborhood.

Today we’ll hear from some of the people who got those jobs, as they begin employment at the new Wal-Mart.

Tomorrow we’ll look at how the West Side Austin community is receiving its new corporate resident.
