Illinois Treasurer Candidates Debate Today

Candidates for Illinois Treasurer will debate today in downtown Chicago.

Treasurer is the only state constitutional office that’s an open seat this November. Democratic Banker Alexi Giannoulias and Republican State Senator Christine Radogno are running to take over for Judy Baar Topinka, who’s running for Governor.

So far, the contest has been large defined a controversy over loans made by Broadway Bank. The bank is owned by Giannoulias’ family and he is a senior loan officer there. The loans in question were made to a man with ties to the organized crime, book making and prostitution.

Several polls have shown Giannoulias with a lead on Radogno. But polls have also shown that many voters remain undecided--an indication the race is still somewhat fluid.

Giannoulias and Radogno will debate downtown at about noon.
