The Search for Immigrant Fugitives

Chicago area immigration officers arrested 16 people in a four-day sweep that ended Thursday.

It’s part of an effort the Department of Homeland Security calls Operation Return to Sender.

As new immigration law is debated around the country, the agency charged with enforcing current law is stepping up efforts. One way is sweeps like this one, that target immigrant fugitives - especially those with criminal records.

Chicago Public Radio’s Catrin Einhorn went along with deportation officers and filed this report.
