Detention Center Takeover?

Cook County officials are close to giving up control of the scandal plagued Juvenile Temporary Detention Center.

Chicago Public Radio’s Sonari Glinton reports.

For the last few years the Cook County’s juvenile jail has been at the center of a storm of scandals.

They include allegations of rampant abuse and mismanagement.

Cook County had fought to keep control over the detention center.

But now the county is indicating it’ll relinquish control voluntarily.

The Cook County board wants Earl Dunlap, head of the national juvenile detention Association as the center’s new leader

This could satisfy critics, chief among them the American Civil Liberties Union.

The ACLU and the county will negotiate how much independence the new leader of the juvenile center should have.

The sticking point is whether any new leader will have the power to hire and fire detention center employees.
