Gary Air Show Takes Off

Chicagoans will have to wait a month to see fighter jets cruising over Lake Michigan. But folks in Northwest Indiana are getting their show this weekend.

Chicago Public Radio’s Michael Puente has more.

There’s really nothing like watching an F-16 fighter jet taking off.

Several F-16 and F-18 Hornet jets blasted off from the Gary Chicago Airport Saturday for the city’s annual air show.

Thousands lined Gary’s lakefront beach to catch a glimpse of the jets, along with stunts by daredevil pilots.

But others like Bill Smith enjoyed watching the planes take off from the airport.

SMITH: It’s a fun place to see it. You get close to the planes and see the pilots. It’s a lot of fun.

The air show also features the Lima Lima stunt flying team. The show continues today with the best view perhaps at Gary’s Marquette Park.
