R. Kelly One Step Closer To Trial

The child pornography case of musician and producer R. Kelly moved one step closer to trial today. The case has lingered on the Cook County docket for more than five years. For Chicago Public Radio, Sam Hudzik reports.

Kelly appeared, but did not speak in court today as lawyers for both sides turned in suggested questions to be used in jury selection. Judge Vincent Gaughan will rule on those questions next week.

Gaughan also set a date for lawyers to meet with the chief judge and figure out the final “technical” details - including courtroom furniture - for the trial.

The case centers around a videotape that allegedly shows Kelly engaging in sex acts with a minor. The judge has previously ruled the tape will be played in open court during the trial.

As he left the courtroom, Kelly was followed out by a dozen or so excited spectators. At least one girl tried to snap a picture of Kelly on her cell phone camera.
