School Funding Debate Heats Up

Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich’s budget proposal is under fire from Chicago Mayor Richard Daley. Daley says the governor’s plan doesn’t go far enough to fund the city’s public schools. Kelley Quinn is a spokesperson for the governor. She says, in a time when other states are cutting funding, Blagojevich is proposing a $60 million boost for Chicago school programs.

QUINN: And on top of that, the governor is pushing Illinois lawmakers to pass a major public works project that would provide a major boost for CPS’s infrastructure and building needs..

Daley plans to head to Springfield this week to lobby state legislators for their support. Chicago Public Schools Chief Arne Duncan and busloads of high school students will join him.
