Suburb Sues ComEd over 'Chronic' Outages

A Chicago suburb is suing ComEd, claiming the power company hasn’t provided reliable service. The village of Deerfield filed a class action lawsuit today on behalf of its residents and businesses. Mayor Steven Harris says he wants to force ComEd to improve service.and pay out unspecified monetary damages.

HARRIS: Years and years and years of discussion that have been met with unfulfilled promises are what we’re used to seeing out of ComEd. And I felt we had no other choice to invoke the court’s jurisdiction to keep them on the straight-and-narrow.

The lawsuit claims “chronic electric service outages” have hit the suburb since 2000, with only 13 percent of those because of bad weather. ComEd wouldn’t comment on that figure. But a spokesman says the company is fulfilling its obligation to provide reliable service.
