Daley Responds to Buildings Department Briberies

Chicago Mayor Richard Daley says he doesn’t understand why some city employees would risk their jobs.

DALEY: People who take money from the public sector and the private sector are going to get caught. It’s a great job. They lose their job. They lose their health benefits. They lose their pension. These are good paying jobs. If you look at other salaries, these are good paying jobs.

Daley calls the alleged actions of the 7 city employees “appalling” and “regrettable.” But he can’t answer Chicago Inspector General David Hoffman’s charge that the corruption is system-wide.

DALEY: I don’t know if it’s systemic. But you can’t indict everybody about that. It’s not everybody. You know that.

He says the city is doing everything it can to prevent corruption.
