CHA Students Participate In College Prep Program

Classes start today for Chicago Housing Authority teens who want to attend college.

Next Step: College Prep is a seven-week educational program that teaches hard and soft skills. High school students learn how to improve in reading and write a resume.

Ronisha King took the classes last year. She liked them so much that she’s back again this summer.

KING: I like it because it shows us how to do different life skills like interviews and what to do at a workplace. And it helped me with my reading and math.

King attends Dunbar High School and wants to attend Spelman College.

Twenty-five students are in the program. They live in public housing or have housing vouchers.

Last year more than half of the CHA high school students in Next Step increased their reading and/or math scores by at least two grade levels.
