Can we ever truly know who our parents were and can we ever overcome family trauma?

Lev Raphael, the author of seven acclaimed mysteries and former mystery reviewer for the Detroit Free Press, trains his detective skills on his own family in this stunning memoir-travelogue. Interviewing people from Belgium to Texas and consulting rare or forgotten documents in French, German and U.S. archives, Raphael pieces together the story of his parents’ complex Eastern European lives before, during, and after the Holocaust.
