Negotiations Continue For Campaign Donation Limits

Time is running out on negotiations to pass campaign donation limits in Illinois this year. Staff from the governor’s office and the legislature are meeting with advocates Tuesday afternoon to keep working on a compromise.

Little has been said publicly about the campaign finance bill since Governor Pat Quinn vetoed it at the end of August. Quinn said he wanted to bring Democrats, Republicans and reform groups together to craft a new plan in time for the October veto session.

SCHUH: At the pace the Democrat majorities are going at, we are concerned that it’ll instead not to ready until next year’s fall veto session, if ever at all.

But Senator Don Harmon, who’s been the Democrats’ point-man on the issue, says he’s confident - by the time lawmakers return to Springfield - they will have a bill that addresses the “perceived shortcomings” pointed out by reform groups.

Quinn vetoed the original bill after those groups and lawmakers from both parties called it weak and full of loopholes.
