Malfunction Leaves West Side of UIC Campus Without Heat

Mobile heating units have been brought in to the University of Illinois at Chicago. That’s after the west side of campus lost heat and hot water earlier today because of an electrical malfunction at the University’s steam plant.

University spokesman Bill Burton says affected buildings include residence halls, laboratories and the University medical center.

BURTON: Our emergency department is on bypass, and we’ve canceled elective surgeries. We still have the ability to perform emergency cases such as emergency c-sections or things of that sort.

Burton says no patients in the medical center have been relocated and classes continue as scheduled. Engineers are hoping to fix the problem by this evening.
