One Killed, 12 Injured in High-Rise Fire

The Chicago Fire Department continues to investigate a fire that broke out early this morning in a downtown Chicago high-rise.

The five-alarm fire raged from the 36th floor up to the 37th of the condo building in Chicago’s Streeterville neighborhood. The Chicago Fire Department reports one fatality and 12 injuries. Larry Langford is a spokesman for the department.

LANGFORD: We had people evacuate at the lower floors. We hope people on the 38th floor and above will be able to get back into their apartments.

Langford says an elderly woman called 911 this morning. Firefighters later found her dead in the apartment where the blaze started. Many of the injured suffered from smoke inhalation. About 10 residents have been displaced and are receiving help from the American Red Cross.
