Durbin: Immigration Reform Is on the Agenda

Illinois U.S. Senator Dick Durbin says comprehensive immigration reform could come this year.

Advocates are pressuring Democrats to act on the immigration issue. They say President Barack Obama hasn’t come through on campaign promises.

But Durbin says revising immigration laws is on the Democratic agenda.

DURBIN: We want to bring a bill forward this year in the Senate, in the House, that deals with comprehensive immigration reform, the things that are absolutely essential. And if I never do another thing in the rest of my Senatorial career, I’m going to pass that Dream Act.

The Dream Act would provide conditional residency and a path to citizenship for young undocumented immigrants. They would be required to demonstrate good moral character while completing a college degree or serving for two years in the military.
