Hoosiers in Northwest Indiana could be paying much more for electricity if a rate hike is approved by the state.

NIPSCO, short for Northern Indiana Public Service Company, is seeking a 16.8 percent increase in electrical charges.

That proposed increase doesn’t sit well with Anthony Swinger.

He works for an Indiana agency that protects the interests of utility customers.

SWINGER: That figure does concern us especially in light of the fact that the commission ordered an overall decrease in revenues.

Tuesday was the deadline for those objecting to the proposed electric rate increase to file complaints.

The city of Hammond and LaPorte County submitted their own objections to NIPSCO’s proposed rate increase.
