Tuesday is officially the final day for voters in Illinois to register to vote. But it’s not exactly a hard deadline.

7.3-million people are registered to vote in Illinois, according to the state board of elections. Anyone not included in that number - or anyone who’s moved recently - has until the end of today to register.

But it’s not much of a deadline. The state allows what’s called grace period voting. So, starting Wednesday and until October 26th, tardy Illinoisans can visit a select few locations and register. Depending on where they live, they’ll either have to vote on the spot, or take home an absentee ballot.

Regardless, grace period voters won’t be able to take part in Election Day. That ceremonial march to the polling place is reserved for folks who register the traditional way - before today’s deadline.
