Congresswoman Schakowsky on Immigration

Supporters of a major overhaul in the nation's immigration laws are hoping for one last shot at a bill this week.

The U.S Senate is debating a compromise immigration proposal backed by President Bush and key members of both parties.

It includes increased border security, a temporary guest worker program, and a path to citizenship for those illegal immigrants who comply with new provisions.

But procedural moves derailed previous attempts to pass the bill earlier this month. And passage this time around is far from certain.

If the bill makes it out of the Senate it's bound to face an even tougher fight in the House.

Illinois Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky is the Chief Deputy Whip in the House of Representatives. She's a Democrat representing Illinois' 9th congressional district on Chicago's north side and near north suburbs.
