Just as We Are

Sexuality is one of the hot topics of the Chicago Latino Film Festival,
which is screening through next week. The documentary Tal Como Somos or Just As We Are explores the stigmatization faced by Latino gay and transgender people across the United States and Latin America.

Eight Forty-Eight's Richard Steele recently talked with University of Illinois Chicago professor Jesus Ramirez-Valles, who researched the topic, and Judith McCray, the director and producer of Tal Como Somos. Valles says Latino families with gay members are often torn apart by stereotypes.

The film Tal Como Somos premieres tonight at 8:30 at the Instituto Cervantes. It's part of the 24th Annual Chicago Latino Film Festival.
