College-Bound: One Girl’s Fight to Make It

College-Bound: One Girl’s Fight to Make It

Right about now, many of the city's high school class of 2008 are deep into senioritis. But many are also thinking about what comes next. That's what's on 18-year-old Beverly Cole's mind. She goes to Fenger Academy High School on Chicago's South Side. Beverly's been keeping an audio diary for Eight Forty-Eight ever since her friend Patrice Brown was shot and killed last summer. Losing her friend Patrice was just one of the latest heartaches for Beverly. Both her father and older brother were murdered, and she spent several years in foster care. But Beverly's determined to chart a different course for herself, starting with activities like JROTC.

Beverly Cole will graduate from Fenger Academy on June 7. She plans to study art in college and once she's done at Moraine Valley Community College, she hopes to transfer to a four-year university.
