Garbage Into Gas

If you're thinking about alternate fuel options, you might not want to toss out that banana peel. It could have a second life as a fuel for your car. Lake County, Indiana, plans to stop shipping its garbage to a landfill and instead convert it to ethanol. According to the Lake County Solid Waste Management District, this sort of plant would be the first of its kind in the U.S. The district hopes to hammer out draft contracts later this month to put the system in place. Hal Slager is on the board of the waste management district. He says people in Lake County decided long ago they didn't want a new landfill. So the board stumbled onto this solution as it went in search of alternatives.
