Financing the General Election

Elsewhere on the money front, the political world is buzzing about Senator Barack Obama's decision to opt out of the public campaign financing system. Critics say he's breaking a pledge to take the public money, which would have limited his own fundraising. He responded Friday with suggestions that Senator John McCain has also flip-flopped on the issue.

Meanwhile, the candidates filed paperwork Friday revealing that the two nominees raised nearly identical sums: a big jump for McCain and a hefty fall-off for Obama. To help make sense of the numbers, we're joined by Cindi Canary. She's director of the Illinois Campaign for Political Reform, and she's our regular campaign finance analyst.
