Latina Lesbian Groups Face Complex Challenges

SHARE Latina Lesbian Groups Face Complex Challenges

According to a study out this month from the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life, gays and lesbians are seen as facing more discrimination than any other group in the United States. Also topping the list? Hispanics. This year's Inter-University Program for Latino Research Conference at the University of Illinois at Chicago will include a panel discussion devoted entirely to Latino queer studies. As the director of DePaul University's Center for Latino Research, that's something Lourdes Torres knows a lot about.

Torres, who also serves on the board of Amigas Latinas—a Chicago organization for the Queer Latina Community—has been studying the history of Latina lesbians organizing in Chicago and the nation.
